Will you take a message? You know who it’s for Will you take a message? And knock upon her door Knock until she answers If you have to knock all night These words I want to say to her Make sure you get 'em right It’s taken me some distance, it’s taken me some time I’ve needed some assistance, since she left me behind Make sure she understands I’ve thought the whole thing through The words I want to say to her I hope they will ring true I’d follow her around the world If I thought it’d make her mine I’d follow her to hell and back If that would change her mind It’s taken me some distance, it’s taken me some time I’ve needed some assistance, since she left me behind It’s taken me some distance, it’s taken me some time I’ve needed some assistance, since she left me behind It’s taken me some distance, it’s taken me some time I’ve needed some assistance, since she left me behind To get her off my mind, since she left me behind

Dominique 03:10
Dominique why must you speak to me that way I love the sound of your voice But the words that you say Are so unnerving and I’m so undeserving Why do you treat me this way? Dominique, I feel too weak to disagree I try to explain but you refuse to see My point of view so what can I do? You overpower me Just when I think that I might have you figured out You go and change the rules and everything’s in doubt If you’d only tell me what it is you want from me I could either give it gladly or you could take it forcibly Dominique your mystique remains intact It’s your show you know it that’s a fact And I can’t change it or rearrange it Or get it back Just when I think that I might have you figured out You go and change the rules and everything’s in doubt If you’d only tell me what it is you want from me I could either give it gladly or you could take it forcibly Dominique why must you speak to me that way I love the sound of your voice But the words that you say Are so unnerving and I’m so undeserving Why do you treat me this way, Dominique?

Say Goodbye 03:32
You’re moving on you’re moving up I guess I should be glad for you I guess that I should wish you luck I guess I should be happy for you Glad that I won’t see you again Happy I don’t have to pretend - anymore Pretend that…there’s a chance that you might love me A chance that I might change your mind A chance that you might see me in a different light So instead of begging you to stay I suppose I’ll have to say goodbye Say goodbye, I’ll say goodbye, say goodbye, I’ll say goodbye Say goodbye, I’ll say goodbye, say goodbye, I’ll say goodbye You’re moving on you’re trading up I guess I should be glad for you I guess that I should wish you luck I guess I should be happy for you Instead of begging you to stay I suppose I’ll have to say goodbye Say goodbye, I’ll say goodbye, I’ll say goodbye, I’ll say goodbye, I’ll say goodbye, I’ll say goodbye, I’ll say goodbye, say goodbye

You and I got married When we were just nineteen That it wouldn’t last the summer Someone should have seen When I walked out that mornin’ In my jacket, jeans, and boots That’s all that I brought with me The rest I left with you The easel and the canvas The oils and the brush I’ve learned to live without them now I left in such a rush Maybe I was crazy, or maybe I was blind But I no longer felt like paintin’ I just felt like wastin’ time You’d never know it from lookin’ in my eyes But it wasn’t easy just to leave it all behind Where I’m goin’, I don’t really know What I’m lookin’ for I may never find I headed for Miami, wound up in New Orleans In the same pair of boots and the same faded jeans Got a job workin’ construction So I could still afford to drink Like the less time I spent sober, the less I had to think You’d never know it from lookin’ in my eyes But it wasn’t easy just to leave it all behind Where I’m goin’, I don’t really know What I’m lookin’ for I may never find I hung around just long enough To get bored with New Orleans Set out for the west coast In a brand-new pair of jeans

Do you know what it’s like to fall head over heels For someone you can’t have do you know how that feels? Do you know how it lingers when it seems there’s no choice How it stabs at my heart just the sound of your voice? Do you know what it’s like, knowing that there’s no chance Knowing I’ll never kiss you, knowing we’ll never dance? Do you know how it feels, knowing you’ll never hear Words that I long to whisper, my lips at your ear? Do you know how it hurts me to see you each day And never be free to say what I want to say? Do you know what it’s like to be burning inside Unable to tell you and unable to hide? Do you know what it’s like, knowing that there’s no chance Knowing I’ll never kiss you, knowing we’ll never dance? Do you know how it feels, knowing you’ll never hear Words I long to whisper, my lips at your ear? Do you know what it’s like to fall head over heels For someone you can’t touch do you know how that feels? Do you know what it’s like to be burning inside Unable to tell you and unable to hide Do you know what it’s like?

A for Aimee 03:48
Aimee I made a mistake Letting you slip away Is it too late to get you back? Did we get too far off track? Aimee I’ve been such a fool I can’t believe the things that I do Is it too late to start again? Like we just met, baby let’s pretend Cause when I see you now I can’t believe my eyes What was I thinking when I let you say goodbye? I made a mistake - I wasn’t thinking I made a mistake - I’m not gonna lie Cause when I see you now I can’t believe my eyes What was I thinking when I let you say goodbye? Aimee I made a mistake Letting you slip away Is it too late to get you back? Did we get too far off track? I made a mistake - I wasn’t thinking I made a mistake - I’m not gonna lie I made a mistake, I made a mistake, I made a mistake

Moving to the city knowing that you can’t go back Livin’ in the city tryin’ to keep your dreams intact Life doesn’t always imitate art You really have to work to warm your heart And you take the crosstown bus Cause there’s something that you’re searching for Take the crosstown bus and find that All the time it’s waiting at my door Everybody wants to take you down You can’t find a friend in this town Please don’t give up the faith Believe me when I say it’s not too late If you’ll take the crosstown bus Cause there’s something that you’re searching for Take the crosstown bus and find that What you wanted was waiting at my door And she can’t believe her eyes They’ve seen such a waste of time, time, time And you take the crosstown bus Cause there’s something that you’re searching for Take the crosstown bus and find that All the time it’s waiting at my door Take the crosstown bus Cause there’s something that you’re searching for Take the crosstown bus and find that What you wanted was waiting at my door Take the crosstown bus, take the crosstown bus Take the crosstown bus, take the crosstown bus

From Now on 04:16
Nobody looks like you do to me Nobody else can do what you do to me And I don’t want anybody else but you here with me From now on From now on it’s gonna be you and me, from now on From this moment forward there’ll be no looking back Where once we wandered aimlessly alone Together we’re right on track So put your hand in my hand this was meant to last Loneliness and sorrow will soon be in the past From now on it’s gonna be you and me From now on it’s gonna be you and me, from now on Nobody sees what you see in me Nobody else can help me be the one I want to be So why would I want anybody else but you here with me? From now on From now on it’s gonna be you and me, from now on From this moment forward there’ll be no looking back Where once we wandered aimlessly alone Together we’re right on track So put your hand in my hand this was meant to last Loneliness and sorrow will soon be in the past From now on it’s gonna be you and me From now on it’s gonna be you and me, from now on From now on it’s gonna be you and me From now on it’s gonna be you and me From now on it’s gonna be you and me, from now on

Take Away 02:25
Take away all the lies that you told to me Take away all the dreams that once set me free The smile on my face and the spring in my step You can take them too Cause if you’re leavin’ then I won’t need them Take them with you Take away all my cash and your diamond ring If you can carry the house go right ahead Take the whole damn thing The sun in the sky and the leaves on the trees They’re my gift to you Cause if you’re leavin’ then I won’t need them What good would they do? Well, I remember the days When I could make you laugh And I could make you smile But those days darlin’ haven’t been round here In a good long while Well, take away all the lies that you told to me Yeah, take away all the dreams that once set me free The smile on my face And the spring in my step you can take them too Cause if you’re leavin’ then I won’t need them Take them with you Oh, take them with you

Dear Melinda 03:35
Dear Melinda, I’m writing this note To let you know just how I feel We’ve let it drag on for so long And it’s gone so wrong That it just seems unreal And if you don’t love me by now I guess you never will In the beginning it all seemed so easy To get you to smile and to laugh But lately your eyes have grown cold And the looks that they give me cut me in half When did our bright future become our dark past? I wish I knew what I could say, Melinda To make you change your mind and turn to stay I know you’ve deceived me I know you will leave me But darlin’ before you go There’s something that I have to say Before you get away with your secret in tow You may think that you’ve kept me fooled But I’ve always known I wish I knew what I could say, Melinda To make you change your mind and turn to stay Dear Melinda, I’m writing this note To let you know just how I feel We’ve let it drag on for so long And it’s gone so wrong That it just seems unreal And if you don’t love me by now I guess you never will Dear Melinda

I’ll be whatever you need me to be, I’ll hold you tight or set you free As long as you love me I’ll be the one who dries your tears, in your golden years As long as you love me I’ll be the one who’ll make you laugh, could you imagine that? As long as you love me I’ll be the one to hold you late at night, I’ll love you with all of my might As long as you love me Because as long as you love me, I’ll have all the strength I need They can cut me, but I won’t bleed, I’ll be satisfied And as long as you love me I won’t need to look anywhere else I can just be myself if I know you’re on my side I’ll sing your babies to sleep, for you I’ll calm the raging sea As long as you love me I’ll walk - I’ll walk a hundred miles, bewitched, bewildered, beguiled As long as you love me Because as long as you love me, I’ll have all the strength I need They can cut me, but I won’t bleed, I’ll be satisfied And as long as you love me I won’t need to look anywhere else I can just be myself if I know you’re on my side When you are lost and all alone, I’ll come and take you home As long as you love me When things don’t go quite as you planned, I’ll offer you my hand As long as you love me As long as you love me, as long as you love me, as long as you love me As long as you love me, as long as you love me, as long as you love me

This band includes Matt Thorsen on guitar and vocals; Pete Wingate on bass, mandolin, guitar, and fiddle; and Dan Styklunas on drums. Matt and Pete have played on both albums.

In addition, Better Late than Never features some special guest musicians:

The Legendary Rich Gilbert (The Zulus, Human Sexual Response, Frank Black and the Catholics, etc.): guitar on "A for Aimee," pedal steel on "Dear Melinda,” and both on "Brand New Pair of Jeans;"

Paul Boblett (Zeppo, Bill T Miller and the Out of Band Experience, December Sons) - bass guitar on "Since She Left Me Behind" and "Dominique" and

Emily Edelstein (Quartet Davis) - viola on "Say Goodbye."

The band’s music touches on Americana, Roots Rock, Singer-Songwriter, and Power Pop genres. Drawing upon influences such as Elvis Costello, Graham Parsons, Hank Williams, and Bob Dylan; John’s songs tell compelling and heartfelt stories of life, love, and loss.

“Better Late Than Never” has 11 original songs, including the recent singles “Since She Left Me Behind", "Take Away,” and "Brand New Pair of Jeans.” It will be available on most streaming music sites, as is the first album.
